"Las Comadres" - Sam Zaragosa Coronado
"Las Comadres" was painted in 1998 in the serigraphy media. 7 Serigraphy is a method in which a special paint is forced
through a fine screen onto the paper beneath. 8 The 17.75'' by 22.5'' 7 piece of art required at least one thousand screens in order to
complete it. 8 The women depicted in the artwork stand out from the rest of the piece due to their brightly colored dresses and ecstatic
expressions.
"Las Comadres" was chosen for the Death Gallery because of the comforting and familiar vision it brings to the eyes.
Although the articles of clothing the women wear are vibrant in color, the rest of the painting is filled with natural, earth-tone colors
which gives the impression that death is a natural part of life because the bright colors, which represent life, are on the skeletons.
Because this scene is of friends visiting one another, which in many cases is as common as breathing to Chicana women, is associated
with death, it allows the viewer to be less scared by death and actually, a little come comforted.
